UNU – IIGH Global Health Seminar, 11 – 13 October 2017

Philippine Sociological Society 2017 National Conference: 05 – 07 October 2017

Preparations are under way for the 2017 PSS National Conference at the University of the Philippines-Cebu on October 5-7, 2017 with the theme, Sociology of Justice.

Plenary speakers include Former Chief Justice Hillario Davide, Jr., our keynote speaker, and Dr. Michel Chossudovsky of the University of Ottawa (Canada) and the Center for Global Research (CRG) to be held at the UP Cebu Performing Arts Hall. Other possible plenary speakers will be announced in the coming weeks.

UP Cebu was founded on May 3, 1918 first as a junior college and over the years has developed as a vibrant constituent unit of the UP system today. Originally located at the Warwick Barracks, the campus is now situated uptown in the bustling Cebu City—a site which used to be a religious seminary and remnant of the Second World War. As kick-off to the series of centennial projects in celebration of the 100th year founding of UP Cebu, the host college, College of Social Sciences partners with the PSS in holding its 2017 annual conference.

This national conference is open to sociologists, social scientists, and practitioners who are professionals, scholars, graduate and undergraduate students, and/or teachers of social studies. So please come and join us!

Abstract submission is still open until 31 July 2017. For more information, visit the conference website  The conference fee is Php 3,000.00 inclusive of meals, snacks, and a conference kit. Undergraduate students may avail of a reduced rate of Php 2,000.00.

The conference experience

Aside from the usual plenary and parallel sessions, the organizers are creatively putting together an exciting program to give all participants an enriching and enjoyable conference experience.

Part of this creative plan is an optional pre-conference tour at Olango Island on October 5, 2017. This wetland island is best known for migratory birds which visit Olango during the last quarter of the year. This promises great island experience especially for bird watchers and beach lovers. More information about this pre-conference tour will be circulated closer to the conference dates.

Also, conference participants will be treated with cultural nights highlighting festive banquette with Sinulog dances, balitaw, balak and harana showcasing the Cebuano Filipiniana culture. Much more is that the University is strategically located at the heart of the city’s fanciful nightlife district.

As with the initial design of the conference bag (see photo), this year’s conference celebrates the diversity of sociological traditions all over the world, various sociologies in different languages with our own Alibata edgings, posing Philippine sociology’s intersection with the global challenge of (in)justice across cultures and across nations.
