DTI Sec. Adrian Cristobal, together with the officials of the Department of Trade and Industry; UP System officials, representing our president Alfredo Pascual, VP for Program and Development Elvira Zamora; board of regents secretary and University Registrar Lilian Delas Llagas; and all officials from the University of the Philippines, both from UP System and UP Cebu, our special guest from the Shu-Te University of Taiwan, Chair Professor Dr. Eimin Wu; representatives from different universities; government agencies; industry sector creative and designers, guests, friends, good morning.
UP Cebu is in a very unique and privileged position. The setting up inside our Lahug campus of DTI’s digital fabrication laboratory, Go-Negosyo Center and Co-working Space, together with our very own existing technology business incubation, or TBI facility called UPCebuInIT and innovation technology support office or ITSO, totally completes the collaborative support ecosystem needed by our MSMEs, be it from the ideation stage to prototyping their products and in providing the support environment to prepare their business in becoming commercially viable.
Likewise, from the academe side, these facilities provide as a practical research laboratory for both our student and faculty, where they can study and apply in practical terms the synergism between the creativity and IT skills for Filipinos and, in particular, the Cebuanos. This is particularly important for us in UP Cebu, where our niches and strengths are in computer science and in creative designs.
Undeniaby, Cebu is a hub for creative industries, and at the same time, for IT and BPO industries. Through these two industries, we do not only see them driving UP employment and contributing to the Philippine economy, but likewise, with the support of FabLab, we are looking forward to the ability of our designers to be able to create products resulting from disruptive and innovative technologies, since our graduates and workforce now will be gaining a more competitive edge, having skills which are more knowledge-based. It is our over-all outlook improving human life through these facilities.
With strong research components, and introduction of studies on new technology, prosthetics products in relation to health management, and robotics for automation initiatives, re areas we are looking forward in the near future, to be produced here in DTI-UP Cebu FabLab. Truly, these facilities provide us the avenue to comply with the three mandates of UP as a national university, on teaching, research and, lastly, public service.
So, in behalf, of the whole UP, we accept the facilities and equipment that DTI had so much generously set up inside the UP Cebu campus and we extend our profound gratitude to DTI.
