The University President
Alfredo E. Pascual is the 20th President of the University of the Philippines (U.P.), the country’s lone national university. Founded in 1908, U.P. is now a system of seven constituent universities and a constituent college with a total of 55,000 students and 12,500 faculty and staff in 16 campuses across the Philippines. Pres. Pascual assumed the U.P. Presidency in February 2011 for a six-year term, after having served as a Regent on the U.P. governing board.
Pres. Pascual worked at the Asian Development Bank (ADB) for 19 years until 2008 occupying various positions including Director of Private Sector Operations, Director of Infrastructure Finance and Advisor for Public-Private Partnership. At ADB, he pursued pioneering projects and institution-building initiatives that helped the bank’s efforts to respond to the emerging financing needs of Asia and catalyze investments in the region’s developing economies, especially in the infrastructure and financial sectors. He spent most of his ADB career at the bank’s headquarters in Manila, but also had postings in New Delhi and Jakarta.
Prior to ADB, Pres. Pascual spent nine years as the American Express Professor of Finance at the Asian Institute of Management (AIM). He also served as the Director of AIM’s advanced bank management program. Early in his career, he taught for about a year at the U.P.
Department of Chemistry and for four years (part-time) at the Department of Management Engineering and the Department of Business Management in Ateneo de Manila University.
For eight years in the 1970s, Pres. Pascual was among the pioneers of investment banking in the Philippines, holding executive positions in Bancom Development Corporation, Philippine Pacific Capital (now RCBC Capital), and First Metro Investment Corporation.
Pres. Pascual obtained his BS Chemistry (cum laude) and MBA from U.P. He attended the EEC-ASEAN Teacher Programme at the Euro-Asia Center in INSEAD, France. He was conferred the honorary Doctor of Pedagogy degree by Angeles University Foundation.
Pres. Pascual is a Professorial Lecturer at the College of Economics and Management of U.P. Los Banos, and the Chairman of the U.P. Foundation, Inc. In addition, he sits on the Board of Trustees of the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI), Steering Committee of the Southeast and South Asia and Taiwan Universities (SATU), and Advisory Board of the Korean Studies Association of Southeast Asia (KoSASA). He also participates in the Presidents’ Meetings of the Association of Pacific Rim Universities (APRU) and the ASEAN University Network (AUN). He is a Governor of the Management Association of the Philippines (MAP), a lifetime member of the Financial Executives Institute of the Philippines (FINEX), and a member of the Rotary Club of Makati.
