1. Research Updates

1. Dr. Lanndon Ocampo reported his publication in the ISI-indexed International Journal of Manufacturing, Materials, and Mechanical Engineering for his research, “The Impact of Firm Size in the Foundation of Sustainable Manufacturing Strategy Infrastructural Decisions Under Uncertainty.”

2. Dr. Robert Roxas presented his paper, “Context-based Synonym Databse for Cebuano Language,” during the International Research Conference on Information Technology Education (IRCITE) 2017, Wesleyan University, Cabantuan City, Nueva Ecija, on 2-3 February 2017.

3. Two faculty members from the College of Social Sciences completed their researches.

• Prof. Kaira Zoe Alburo-Cañete submitted her proof of publication for her research, “Breast is Best? A Feminist Re-reading of Breastfeeding Policies and Practices in the Philippines.” The paper has been accepted for publication in the Philippine Quarterly of Culture & Society Volume 42 Nos. 3-4 (2014). This is in completion of her UP Cebu Research and Creative Work Grant 2014.

• Dr. Phoebe Zoe Maria Sanchez submitted the final report of her research, “History of Cebu’s ‘Tabo-tabo’ (Auction Market): Social Construction of Lexicons of Trust, Redistribution, Reciprocity and Kinship Rank.” Dr. Sanchez also presented this paper last 11 January 2017 during the international conference entitled, “A Great Transformation? Global Perspectives on Contemporary Capitalisms” in Johannes Kepler University Linz, Austria. This is in completion of her Faculty Grant 2015.

4. Dr. Leahlizbeth Sia submitted her revised proposal, “An investigative study on the antecedents and effects of organizational citizenship behavior (OCB) amongst Cebu employees using the multi-criteria decision analysis (MCDA) approach.” The research will be funded under the Academic Program Improvement (API) 2015 of the School of Management.

1. The office provided documentation support during the Socio-Caravan Visayas held in UP Cebu AVR 1 last 3 February 2017. Guest speakers were Dr. Zona Amper from the University of San Carlos, Dr. Jayeel Cornelio from Ateneo de Manila University, Dr. Phoebe Sanchez from University of the Philippines Cebu and Dr. Clarence M. Batan from the University of Sto. Tomas.

ADMINISTRATIVE MATTERS

1. Workshops/seminars

1. The research team attended the UP Cebu Strategic Planning last 5-6 January 2016 in the UP Professional Schools.

2. The research staff and director attended the Academic Program Improvement of the College of Social Sciences in City Sports Club Cebu last 20 January 2017. The activity, “Developing Linkages with International Collaborators, Industry and Government Partners,” was conducted by Dr. Diane Chambers of the University of Notre Dame Australia.

2. Activities assisted

1. With the director as the head of the Search Committee, the research staff assisted the consultations for the Search for the First Dean of School of Management. The consultations were conducted last 18 January 2017 in the UP Cebu AVR 1.

1. Research Updates

1. Prof. Ma. Theresa Tabada presented her paper, “Media Self-regulation through Media Literacy: Insights from the Cebu Citizens-Press Council (CCPC),” during the 2016 Asian Congress for Media and Communication (ACMC) International Conference in the University Muhammadiyah, Yogyakarta, Indonesia, last 28 October 2016. The presentation was reported on December 2016.

ACADEMIC MATTERS

1. Research Updates

1. Prof. Rochelle Haidee Ybañez submitted her final paper on “Detection of gastrointestinal parasites in commercial swine farms in Cebu, Philippines.” The paper is in completion of her Faculty Grant Award 2015.

The paper was also presented last 22-23 September 2016 at the Cityscape Hotel, Mandaue City.

2. Prof. Mae Claire Jabines submitted her revised research proposal, “The Tale of 2 Rivers: Exploring the Impacts of the Eco-Tourism Activities of Abatan anad Loboc Rivers in the Province of Bohol.” The research proposal is funded under the Academic Program Improvement (API) 2015 of the Social Sciences Cluster.

3. The School of Management reported a publication as chapter of a book by one of their faculty members. Dr. Lanndon Ocampo published his research, “Adoption of Online Marketing for Service SMEs with Multi-Criteria Decision-Making Approach,” in the Handbook of Research on Intelligent Techniques and Modeling Applications in Marketing Analytics. The book was published by IGI Global on October 2016.

4. Dr. Belinda Espiritu presented her paper, “The Lumad Struggle for Social and Environmental Justice: Analyzing Critical Discourses and Activitists’ Political Actions as Weapons for Liberation,” during the 2016 Asian Congress for Media and Communication (ACMC) International Conference in the University Muhammadiyah, Yogyakarta, Indonesia, last 29 October 2016. The presentation was reported on November 2016.

5. UP Cebu Phil-LIDAR reported the following research presentations on November 2016. The researches presented are as follows:

1. Research Updates

1. Dr. Jocelyn Pinzon submitted her Faculty Grant 2015 proposal, “Junior Kilat’s Three Popular Songs as Hidden Transcript.”

2. Atty. Francis Michael Abad submitted his revised research proposals, “On Church and State: Examining the Doctrine of Benevolent Neutrality.’ The research proposal is funded under the Academic Program Improvement (API) 2015 of the Social Sciences Cluster.

3. Prof. Demelo Lao presented his paper, “eLearning for Introductory Computer Science Concept on Recursion Applying Two Types of Feedback Methods in the Learning Assessment,” during the 30th Annual Conference of the Asian Association of Open Universities Conference (AAOU 2016) in Crowne Plaza, Manila Galleria, last 26-28 October 2016. The paper was co-authored by Lynnard Mondigo and won the Best Paper Award – Silver Medal (2nd prize).

4. Two faculty members presented their papers during the 53rd Scientific Seminar and Annual Convention (SSAC) in Heritage Hotel, Roxas Blvd., Pasay City, last 19-21 October 2016.

3. Prof. Eukene Bensig submitted the final report of her Faculty Grant 2015 paper, “Coliform and Physicochemical factors of Buhisan, Bulacao and Lahug Rivers, Cebu, Philippines.” The research was published in WALIA 32 (S1): 28-30.

7. 2 faculty members submitted the final reports of their faculty grant paper/creative work on 20 September 2016:

8. The office endorsed to the Office of the Vice President for Academic Affairs 4 UP Cebu research proposals from the Arts and Humanities Cluster, Sciences Cluster, and Social Sciences Cluster that were submitted for the Enhanced Creative Work and Research Grant.

ADMINISTRATIVE MATTERS

1. Supported activity

The office assisted the Department of Computer Science in its international conference last 21-22 September 2016 in UP Cebu. The conference entitled, “Workshop on Computation: Theory and Practice 2016,” was attended by more than 50 participants.

2. Other intervening activities

The research staff represented the University as a member of the Regional Search Committee for the 2016 Search for Outstanding Volunteer. The committee interviewed the nominees last 29 September 2016 in NEDA Region 7. For this year, the committee endorsed three regional nominees: National Outstanding Volunteer Award for Individual (Adult), National Outstanding Volunteer Award for Organization (Non-Profit), and Volunteer Lifetime Achievement Award.

Other members of the Search for Outstanding Volunteer-Regional Screening Committee (SOV-RSC) Region 7 are the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA 7), as chair, the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG), the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), the Philippine Information Agency (PIA 7), the Civil Service Commission (CSC 7), and the Ramon Aboitiz Foundation Inc., representing the Non-Government Organization (NGO).

3. Gawad Dekana 2016 Recognition

The entire staff of the research office was recognized during the Gawad Dekana 2016 last 23 September 2016. The Gawad Dekana is a yearly event in celebration of UP Cebu’s autonomy.

Director Yuleta Orillo was recognized for her 25 years of service in UP Cebu. University Research Associate Cora Jane Lawas received a Special Citation for finishing her Master of Science in Geoinformation Science with specialization in Natural Resource Management in University Twente, The Netherlands. The research staff, Julie Nieva, was awarded as the Outstanding Employee and also received a Special Citation for graduating Master of Business Administration in UP Cebu.

1. Research Updates

1. Dr. Belinda Espiritu reported her publication “Negative media portrayal of Islam.” The research was published in Media Development 63: 15-19.

2. Prof. Kim Bondoc reported his publication “Climate Change Awareness among Students in the Secondary Level.” The research was published in European Academic Journal 3 (3): 2714-2730 last June 2015.

3. The office endorsed to the Office of the Vice President for Academic Affairs three UP Cebu research proposals from the Business Management and Sciences Cluster submitted for the Enhanced Creative Work and Research Grant.

4. Dr. Jonnifer Sinogaya presented the research “Identifying surface impoundments on LiDAR generated DEMs to identify dengue prone areas” during The 3rd International Symposium on Environment and Health in Galway, Ireland, last August 14-20, 2016. The research is an output of the LiDAR project and was presented with Isballea Pauline Quijano, Jao Hallen Bañados, and Chito Patiño.

1. Supported activity

The office assisted the Social Sciences Cluster in the preparations for their activity “UP OIL World Experts Lecture Series Programme” held in UP Cebu Performing Arts Hall on 24-25 August 2016.

2. Administrative accomplishment

The staff and university research associate attended the Performance Based Bonus (PBB) 2016 meeting in UP Diliman last 5 August 2016.

1. Research Updates
1. Prof. Brisneve Edullantes submitted his research proposal “Spatiotemporal patterns of phytoplankton photophysiology and primary productivity in an altered river estuary.” The research is funded under the Faculty Grant 2015.

2. Dr. Catherine Rodel submitted the completion of her Faculty Grant 2015 funded creative work entitled, “Music of the Night: Serenata @ 16 goes Broadway.”

3. Mr. Jason Baguia presented the research, “Warrior, Peacemaker: Media Depiction of Christian
Religious Actors in Kenyan and Philippine 2013 Election Coverage” during the International Association for Media and Communication Research Annual Conference 2016 in the Lecture Theater 1, Attenborough Building, University of Leicester in the Religion, Communication and Culture, on 29 July 2016. The paper was co-written by Muthoki Mumo and Ole Krogsgaard.

4. Prof. Rhenozo Barte reported his paper, “Test and Demonstration of a Benford’s Law and Approximate Distribution of DV Amounts,” that was presented during the SBE International Conference on Business and Economy (SBE-ICBE) 2016 in Michael Richartz Building Tourism Center, School of Business and Economics, University of San Carlos, Cebu, on 12 February 2016.

5. Prof. Anna Marie Talam reported 2 international research presentations:

• “Weathering the “Push and Pull” Factors of Labor Mitigation: Filipinos Across East Asian Borders” was presented during the 2016 SEAA (Society for East Asian Anthropology) Hong Kong Conference in The Chinese University of Hong Kong last 19-22 June 2016.

• “A Journey of Bundles and Tasks: From Hinterland to the City’s Marketplace” was presented during the 2016 International Conference on Business and Social Sciences (ICBASS) in Kyoto, Japan, last 29-31 March 2016.

6. Phil-LIDAR Program 1 reported 1 international research presentation and 1 international poster presentation:

• “Spatial Analysis of High Residential Density Areas Vis-a-Vis Disaster Response in Two Cities of Western Visayas, Philippines” was presented during the H-City International Conference on Geographies of Health and Living in Cities in Hong Kong last 21-24 June 2016. It was written by Chito Patiño, Olavides, R., and Dr. Jonnifer Sinogaya.

• “Running to Safety: Analysis of Disaster susceptibility of Neighborhoods and Proximity of Safety Facilities in Silay City, Philippines” was presented as a poster presentation during XXIII International Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (ISPRS) Congress in Prague, Czech Republic last 12-19 July 2016. It was written by Chito Patiño, Naressa Belle Saripada, Olavides, R., and Dr. Jonnifer Sinogaya.

7. The following research studies reported in July 2016 were accomplished by faculty members in the previous year:

• Dr. Mary Gretchen Chaves published her paper on “The Integration of Sustainability in the Business Curricula of Cebu Universities and Colleges: A Review” in the Journal of Ecology and Conservation 16: 179-201.

• Atty. Liza Corro’s research paper, “The Twenty-First Century Education: Promoting the Learner-Focused Paradigm,” was included as in the international proceeding of the 2015 International Conference Workshop for Teachers and Administrators: The 21st Century Education of Promoting the Learner-Focused Paradigm in Traveller’s Hotel, Subic Freeport Zone, Olongapo City, on 28 October 2015.

• Phil-LIDAr Program 1 presented the paper, “Flood Risk Exposure Determination Using Feature Extraction,” during the Asian Conference on Remote Sensing, Manila, on 19-23 October 2015. The paper was written by Naressa Belle Saripada, Jao Hallen Bañados, Chito Patiño, and Dr. Jonnifer Sinogaya.

8. Prof. Mae Claire Jabines submitted the hard copy of her research, “Fiesta and Tourism: Exploring the Role of a Socio cultural Activity towards the Development of Local Tourism in the Province of Bohol, Philippines,” that was published in 2014 as a chapter of the book, “Rethinking Asian Tourism: Culture, Encounters and Local Responses.”

ADMINISTRATIVE MATTERS

1. Hosted activity
The office assisted the Sciences Cluster in organizing “A Lecture on Computational Trust” by Dr. Jean-Marc Seigneur last 12 July 2016. Dr. Seigneur is a senior lecturer and research manager from the University of Geneva.
