Florida-based Cebuano scientist to lecture on molecular genetics, gene therapy
University of the Philippines Cebu Central Visayas Studies Center (UP Cebu-CVSC) in partnership with the university’s Sciences Cluster is inviting students and interested participants to a Seminar on Gene Therapy of Professor Galileo Encabo on January 22, 2014.
In an effort to inspire young students to pursue studies on molecular genetics, Professor Encabo, Senior Biological Scientist at the Department of Ophthalmology in the University of Florida, aims to demystify molecular biology.
This includes the study wherein diseases that arise due to a failure or destruction of a gene may be cured by replacing the failed or destroyed gene with a functional gene. Normally a healthy gene will “give a command” to the cell to produce a certain protein. If that protein is not produced, then a disease condition arises.
A native of Asturias, Cebu, and a former UP Cebu faculty, Professor Encabo is now part of a group of research scientists at the University of Florida that are trying to use “gene replacement” in order to cure certain diseases.
The Seminar on Gene Therapy will be held in UP Cebu Union Building at 1:00PM and is open to all interested students and individuals.
