Multi-awarded journalist known for public service is UP Cebu commencement speaker

MEET UP CEBU’S 2015 COMMENCEMENT SPEAKER MULTIAWARDED broadcast journalist, Ms. Jessica Soho, whose colorful career in the media industry, will speak before UPC graduates on 25 June 2015, at the UPC Grounds at 3 p.m.

Soho waived the university expenses for her Cebu trip in favor of a scholar. “Knowing the challenges and the value of getting a UP education, Ms. Soho had spontaneously decided instead to donate to a deserving UP Cebu student what we should have spent in having her as our commencement speaker, like air fare, accommodation and other expenses.” said UPC Dean Atty. Liza D. Corro.

Multi-awarded broadcast journalist and UP College of Mass Communication alumna Jessica Soho is UP Cebu's 2015 commencement speaker. Her brand of journalism has been one marked by public service. UPC Dean Atty. Liza Corro says Soho's extensive career exemplifies the "Tatak UP" brand.

Multi-awarded broadcast journalist and UP College of Mass Communication alumna Jessica Soho is UP Cebu’s 2015 commencement speaker. Her brand of journalism has been one marked by public service. UPC Dean Atty. Liza Corro says Soho’s extensive career exemplifies the “Tatak UP” brand.

A UP College of Mass Communication alumna, Soho carries an extensive career in journalism that is marked by development-oriented programs and documentaries. Her journalism helped expose tales of injustice and influenced public policy and humanitarian work.

Ms. Soho exemplifies what we refer to as the ‘Tatak UP.’ A alumna who excels in her field of endeavor, coupled with a public conscience, the desire to always serve what is good for the critical mass.” said Dean Corro.

Soho was a recipient of a number of awards from the George Foster Peabody Award, recognizing her works that engaged the community, encouraged intelligent public discourse and defended public interest. Two of these recognized documentaries tackled human organ trade in inner-city Manila and the gruesome realities of boxing’s underworld in the Philippines.

Her nightly news program SONA won the coveted Silver Medal in the US International Film and TV Festival (USIFV) for its coverage of Surper-typhoon Yolanda.

She is also the first Filipino who won the British Fleet Journalism Award in 1998, also in recognition of her journalistic works that served public interest. Soho’s story of a hostage crisis in Cagayan Valley earned her the distinction as the first Filipino to win the New York Film Festival for Coverage of a Breaking Story.

Her news programs earned various accolades both for her team and the network. She is one of the brains behind the long-running one-hour documentary television program I-Witness, a late night program that ran since 1999.

Soho also has a recent TV program format that reunites lost relatives.

In 2004, during the annual Cebu Press Freedom Week gathering of beat journalists, she said, “Provincial and regional journalists, in my view, are the real heroes in this profession. The dangers and risks you face and encounter are no doubt far greater than those we face in Manila… But despite the hazards of the job, journalists must work hard and strive to make Philippine media strong, robust and credible.”

Sun.Star Cebu editor Michelle So remembers Soho’s gesture during that year in her Facebook post, “Years back, I invited Jessica Soho to speak before Cebu journalists during the Cebu Press Freedom Week. She refused to receive an

honorarium because, she said, she should not feel obligated to share her knowledge with young journalists by getting paid. And she insisted on paying for the lanzones she brought back to Manila.”

UP Cebu has new dean, unveils SRP campus

By Bernadette A. Parco
Published in Sunstar Cebu, Thursday, January 31, 2013.

INFORMATION technology systems development, academic research and the creation of a forum for international exchange of culture and customs are among the priority programs of the new University of the Philippines (UP) Cebu dean, Atty. Liza D. Corro.

The UP Cebu is also receiving an additional budget this year for its maintenance and operating expenses, for the construction of new infrastructure and the opening of professor positions.

Corro was installed yesterday morning, while the UP system’s Second Professional School campus was inaugurated at the South Road Properties (SRP) in the afternoon. She is the 9th dean of UP Cebu.

“Our different programs in UP Cebu will be anchored in computer science. Believing on multi-disciplinarity, I can assure all programs will be equally developed and all will receive the needed support,” she said in a speech at the Cebu Cultural Center.

The proposed hub is eyed as a venue for students to express their creativity and is aimed at harnessing formal learning capacities, information technology and research and inventive capacities.

“And any inventions they will come up with, can be easily nurtured here still in UP Cebu, through our existing technology business incubator or TBI program,” said Corro.

Also present at the installation rites were Corro’s siblings, including Lapu-Lapu City Mayor Paz Radaza, UP President Alfredo Pascual, UP Board of Regents member and Aurora Rep. Sonny Angara.

A corporate lawyer, Corro said she accepted the appointment to lead UP Cebu despite options to join politics or the judiciary.

In an interview, Angara said the UP System will have an additional P5-billion budget this year. The funds will be allotted mostly for infrastructure projects and hiring of new teachers.

Pascual, meanwhile, said UP Cebu’s budget will be more than double this year for maintenance and operating expenses.

Corro also announced a plan to “develop a strong research culture” for faculty members and students as well as develop a forum for exchange of culture and systems with other countries.

The new dean also pledged to support the preservation and development of the Cebuano culture by creating an arts and culture committee and to seek support for the development of cultural groups.

“I also see the need to revisit the campus renewal plan and address the infrastructure needs of UP Cebu. I feel there is a need for this including the establishment of multi-media facilities that will enhance teaching, especially in the general education program, the heart of the UP education,” said Corro.
