Team CCLEX, composed of UP Cebu Computer Science students, has emerged victorious at the Philippine Junior Data Science Challenge 2024, held on November 16, 2024. Organized by the UP Data Science Society, the competition challenged participants to develop innovative, data-driven solutions for sustainable urban mobility.

The team’s winning project, LakbAI, is an innovative AI-powered tool aimed at improving pedestrian mobility and promoting sustainability in urban areas. Designed to help urban planners and policymakers enhance sidewalk accessibility, LakbAI tackles key mobility challenges with data-driven insights.

Transforming urban mobility with LakbAI

Driven to address critical issues in urban mobility, the tool analyzes infrastructural, socioeconomic, and environmental factors affecting sidewalk access, offering dynamic solutions for more inclusive and pedestrian-friendly cities.

At the heart of LakbAI is a hierarchical fuzzy inference system and a predictive neural network, which together generate an accessibility index for sidewalk segments. This enables decision-makers to identify and prioritize areas in need of improvement. With its built-in data annotation tool, LakbAI further enhances its utility by providing a geospatial overview of pedestrian navigation challenges, ensuring smarter urban development.
