Prof. Phoebe Zoe Maria Sanchez presented the paper entitled “Playing the Game: Reform Politicians in the Field of Cebuano Traditional Politics” at the First CSSP Graduate Student Research Conference on 28 February 2015 at Palma Hall, University of the Philippines Diliman, Quezon City.

3. Extension Works

The High School Program in collaboration with the Office of International Linkages had a forum entitled “Student Exchange Program Forum” with the participation of the UP High School students and some Japanese students held at AVR 2, UP Cebu on 18 February 2015.

The M.Ed Program had an activity on “Research Forum on Language Education” with the participation of some M.Ed students on 21 February 2015 at AVR UP Professional School, UP Cebu.

The Political Science Program held an API lecture entitled “Methodologies Used in Analyzing the Dimensions of Poverty” with Dr. Michel Chossudovsky of the Center for Research on Globalization at the University of Otawa in Canada as resource person on 21 March 2015.

Prof. Mae Claire Jabines presented a research paper entitled “Evolving from a Social Movement to a People’s Organization: The Case of San Vicente Mangrove Association (SAVIMA) of Maribojoc, Bohol, Philippines” during the Tenth Annual Conference of the Asian Studies Association of Hong Kong at Chu Hai College of Higher Education (Hong Kong) on 14-15 March 2015.

2. Intensify Research

Mr. Ronald Pernia presented a research paper entitled “The LGU’s venture into the tertiary education: some lessons on educational change and perceived politicization” during the 2015 Philippine Political Science Association Annual International Conference, with the theme Heroes And Villains. Also attended by Prof. Zenaida Ligan-Ashburn, Prof. Mae Claire Jabines and Jose Antonio Ferreros. The said conference was held at Dipolog Medical Center College Foundation Dipolog City on 10-11 April 2015.

Plenary Speaker Dr. Aurelio Vilbar presented the research on using Tablets and Ipads in Teaching which was field tested in the laboratory high school. Prof. Kim Bondoc demonstrated on how to use apps for disaster-risk management.

3. Extension Works

The Social Sciences Cluster in cooperation with The Cebu Educators Forum (CEF) conducted a Public Forum on “Peace Solidarity” with Prof. Phoebe Zoe Maria Sanchez as Organizer , Prof. Henry Francis Espiritu, and Prof. Michel Chossudovsky (a visiting Professor from University of Ottawa) as Discussants. Also, with Rey Claro Casambre (Executive Director Phil. Peace Center) & Comm. Pedrito A. Eisma (representative of Hon. Mohager Iqbal) as Resource Speakers held on 30 April 2015.

1. As a Graduate University:
1. The Master of Education (M. Ed) program has 32 students graduated last June 25, 2015. Of the 32, 3 were Chemistry majors, 9 were English majors, 14 were Mathematics majors, 4 were Physics majors, and 2 were Social Studies majors.
2. The Psychology program has 36 students graduated last June 25, 2015. Among the 36, 1 was Magna cum Laude and 9 were Cum Laude.
3. The Political Science Program has 20 students graduated last June 25, 2015. Among the 20, 9 were Cum Laude.

1. Academic Program Improvement (API)

The Social Sciences Cluster conducted the following Academic Program Improvement:

July 15, 2015 – “Feasibility Study for the Proposed BBE-MBE Program – Part 2”

The teachers and staff of UP High School and Masters in Education Program formed three groups to fulfill the survey for the BBE-MBE Program which is proposed for 2017. One group headed by Dr. Catherine Rodel visited Southern Cebu, another headed by May Christina Bugash for Northern Cebu and one group for Cebu City headed by Dr. Aurelio Vilbar.

2. Extension Works

1. UP Alumni Batch 1990 conducted Medical Mission to UP High School Cebu on July 18, 2015. This event was enjoyed by the students , parents, relatives , teachers and staff . The medical mission offered the following services: Cervical Screening, Dental Check-up , Child and Adult Consultation, FBS Blood Sugar Screening, ECG, and Bone Density Screening . Medicine and vitamins were also given to the recipients.

2. Prof. Phoebe Zoe Maria Sanchez was the resource speaker during the conduct of Roll out Training on Empowering Learning Sessions for Indigenous People Initiatives (ELIPI) organized by the Department of Social Welfare & Development (DSWD) on July 21-24, 2015 at the Crown Regency Hotel, Lapu-lapu City.

3. Students

1. The brave men and women of the BFP- Bureau of Fire Protection Cebu City conducted a seminar-workshop and drill on Fire Prevention and Disaster Preparedness on July 13, 2015. This whole day event marked a remarkable experience of the students in making themselves safe and sound during fire, earthquake and other natural calamities. The students were taught how to operate the fire extinguisher in putting out fire, to organize themselves during earthquake and to administer the right safety and rescue procedure.

2. An alumna of UP Cebu – Psychology program named Mary Donnavel Acasio Libron got the 3rd place during the 2015 Psychometrician Licensure Examination.

 

 

August 2015

SOCIAL SCIENCES CLUSTER

1. Continuing Education Workshop in Social Science 2

The Social Sciences Cluster conducted an API activity on continuing education workshop that aims to keep the faculty abreast of the current issues in the Social Sciences as well as the state-of-the art in teaching and research in the field.

The Cluster discussed plans for possible new courses to institute for the revised curricula of BA PolSci and BA Psych. During this activity, the faculty also started preparations for the course outlines for the new courses to be instituted.

2. Buwan ng Wika 2015
The UP High School celebrated Buwan Ng Wika with series of activities done in the Filipino classes of Prof. Kayumanggi Monsanto. The celebration was participated by students from Grade 7 to Grade 10. These activities were poster-making , poem composition, Sabayang Bigkas, Mimicry of Young Maria Clara and Jose Rizal, Pagtatalumpati, and Love Duet.
The culmination was a fiesta celebration presenting an array of Filipino delicacy which students and parents prepared. Each level decorated their tent to show the festive Filipino culture coined as “Baryo Fiesta”.
The most awaited part of the activity was the ABAKADA Ensemble, a play by the Grade 10 students presenting the ABAKADA script written by Dr. Primitivo Ereno and the “tatak UP” interpretation of the seniors with the juniors as the chorus. As it is a tradition, the presentation projected the history of the development of the Filipino language as it is woven in the history of the Philippines under the hands of the colonizers.
The winners of the competition were presented during the general assembly and flag raising ceremony of the whole UP at the oblation square.

3. NCAE for Grade 9
Forty (40) UP High School students took the National Career Assessment Examination(NCAE ) on 26 August 2015. This examination aims to assess their academic tracking and readiness for Senior High.

1. Bangga sa Kinaadman 2015

UP Cebu wins Bangga sa Kinaadman 2015, College Level. Sponsored by the Cebu City government. In the photo is Mark Vincent J. Nogra, BA Political Science, who won last August 14, 2015. This is the 4th win for UP Cebu. Previous winners were Deo Albeos, Mina Lim-Ganzon and JunMar. Denila. All of them were coached by Prof. Mae Claire Jabines.

2. BA Psych 2009 alumna passed the Physicians’ Licensure Exam namely: Journey Joyce Yamyamin, & Josephine Grace Rojo.

 

September 2015

1. Curriculum Development and Revision Workshop

The Social Sciences Cluster conducted an API activity on “Curriculum Development and Revision Workshop” on September 23-25, 2015 that aims to finalize the changes to be made in the curricula of the Political Science and Psychology Programs. The faculty also finalized the new courses to be instituted with the new curricula. With the reduction of GE units from 45-36, both programs increased the number of major courses to be offered. Electives and Special Topics were also increased to make the curricula more flexible.

2. M.Ed Revision
The Faculty of UP High School along with able consultants, Dr. Primitivo Ereno and Dr. Elisa Lapa convened to finalize the MEd Revision on September 29, Tuesday.The objective of this API is to polish and complete the Rationale and Objectives and most importantly, the course offerings of the Proposed MEd Program which will be presented by Prof. May Christina Bugash at the curriculum committee on a scheduled date.

2. University of the Philippines High School hosts Inter-Public Elementary Math and Science Quiz Bowl

September 23, 2015 marked the annual Math and Science quiz bowl elementary level hosted by UP High School. This competition was participated by 27 schools namely: Babag I, Bagong Lipunan, Barrio Luz, Camputhaw, City Central, Don Vicente Rama, Guadalupe, Hipodromo, Inayawan, Labangon, Lahug, Lapu-lapu, Mabolo, Malubog, Marigondon, Minglanilla, Ocana, Opra, Pardo, Pusok, San Nicolas, STEC, Talamban , Talisay, Tejero and Zapatera.

These schools vied for the following awards: Gold, Silver and Bronze which were garnered by the following respectively : STEC, Lahug and Minglanilla.

Questions included in this contest were related to science , math and technology from the following instructors: Prof. May Christina Bugash (chairman of the activity), Prof. Roberto Basadre, Prof. Hazel Trapero, Prof. Jeraline Gumalal and Prof. Kim Bondoc, who also hosted the event.

After the awarding ceremony , the contestants with their coaches were escorted to UP High School to witness the bulletin board display of each Grade level. They were also welcomed with various mind games and challenges prepared by the members of the Math and Science clubs and other UP High volunteers at the open court to liven up their visit.

3. Human Rights Forum

The University of the Philippines Political Science Society – UPPSS organized the forum that tackles human rights & commemoration of the Martial Law on 22 September 2015.This was participated by the students from the University of the Visayas & University of San Carlos. 3. UP High School Celebrates 2015: The International Year of Light

Cognizant to the need of the students to maximize learning in Math and Science not only in the four walls of the classroom , UP High School joined the globe in celebrating the International Year of Light. This activity was spearheaded by the Math and Science instructors . Students from all levels made bulletin board displays which feature the theme of the celebration. The jingle composition competition projected an interesting opening salvo . The quantum race alerted students mind and body which made them fulfil the tasks despite the rain. The VIDOlympics which include; meter stick balancing, Bernoulli’s ball relay, egg drop competition, egg catching, catapult making, tower-making and light and sound show tested the students’ knowledge in science not only in terms of theories and principles but also in practice.
Technology also played a big part in the Web Quiz which featured various questions to test the cognitive level of the students in math, science, and technology.
The UP High School faculty and staff headed by Dr. Catherine Rodel joined force in making this activity a big success.
October 2015

1. Curriculum Development and Institution of Masters in Global Studies

The Social Sciences Cluster conducted an API activity on “Curriculum Development & Institution of Masters in Global Studies” on 08-10 October 2015. The resource speakers Dr. Carolina Hernandez and Atty. Katherine Hernandez helped the Political Science Program conceptualize and plan for the Masters in Global Studies. Recognizing the various processes that accompanies a globalized world, the proposed MGS Program will provide a deep and broad understanding of the various factors and forces that affect inter-state relations. It will develop critical analytical skills and competencies that will enable graduates to challenge mainstream thinking in and propose alternatives to various global trends and issues. It will also develop knowledge, skills and competencies in designing roadmaps for obtaining peace and security in the international sphere.

2. Forum on Promoting Disability-Inclusive Disaster Risk Reduction for a Resilient, Inclusive, and Equitable Philippines

The Political Science Society organized a “Forum on Promoting Disability-Inclusive Disaster Risk Reduction for a Resilient, Inclusive, and Equitable Philippines” on the 16th of October at AS Conference Hall. The said activity aims to contribute to mainstreaming disability perspectives in Disaster Risk Reduction in particular and development in general in order to ensure that the most marginalized sectors in society are not left behind in accessing and acting on lifesaving risk information.

They invited representatives from Handicap International and National Commission on Disability Affairs as guest speakers. The activity was geared towards promoting an awareness for the need of inclusive development especially in times of increasing vulnerabilities to disasters.

3. UP High Celebrates Know Your School Day (KYSD) 2015

UP High students act as teachers and staffs in the Know Your School Day (KYSD) 2015 which was celebrated last October 12-14. This three – day activity permitted the students to apply for positions of teachers and staff in the whole school including higher ranking positions like deanship , Vice Presidents, Cluster Chair and Guidance Staff. The main goal of the event is to let the students feel the positions and perform the responsibilities as these will give them inspiration, to achieve, to aspire and to take care of the position when their time comes. UP High teachers on the other hand stayed at the faculty room to facilitate and cater to students’ needs. They provided guidance and immediate advice especially to the student teachers.

4. Career Day 2015: UP High Invades SRP
Invited speakers who were UP Alumni shared insights about their fields of specialization to inspire High School students as they think about the careers they would like to pursue. The speakers and their topics were as follows: Dr. Jecyl Amaya-Radam on Psychiatry, Quennie Sanchez-Bronce on Working for a Newspaper, Dr. Rio dela Pena on Medicine, Nino James Banares on Song Writing, Dr. Tiffany Adelaine Tan on Marketing and Management, Gerardo Ray Abatol on Debating, Prof. Paul Cabral on Mathematics, Prof. Gregg LLoren on Filmmaking, Jacqueline Hayley Limtin on Running a School, Atty. Olive Grace Tapayan-Hebron on Law, Engr. Van Patiluna on Robotics, Mariano Vidal on Painting, Jose A. Tan II on Business, Sr. Insp. Maria Theresa Macatangay on Anti-Human Trafficking Ellen May Zanoria- Reynes on Chemical Engineering and the Environment and Jude Bacalso on Public Speaking.
