UP Cebu ends Women’s Month with One Stop Shop for Women

womens month 03-2014Women’s Month – the theme for this year is “Juana, ang Tatag Mo ay Tatag Natin sa Pagbangon at Pagsulong!”

Through the leadership of the Coordinator of the Gender and Development Office, Dr. Rhodora Bucoy, a public service program— “One Stop Shop for Women: Halad sa Kababayen-an,” will culminate the celebration at the Arts and Sciences Lobby. The Halad sa Kababayen-an will include medical services for women on a first come, first served basis, legal and psychosocial counseling, healing massage / reflexology, women’s bazaar, free skills training on the use of internet technology for social advocacy, registration for assessment, certification and scholarships (free of charge) through TESDA Region 7, application and updating of memberships through PhilHealth, and consultation on birth records problems through the National Statistics Office/PSA.  Free beauty product sampling will also be provided by NU Skin.  These services will be offered by collaborating agencies and entities like the Visayas Primary Health Care led by Dr. Erlinda Yap, Legal Alternatives for Women, Philippine Statistics Authority/NSO, TESDA-7, the Department of Social Welfare and Development-7, the University of San Carlos Psychology Department, Atty. Ian Manticajon, Boy Canedo and Co., UP Cebu AUPWU and the UP Cebu Computing Services Unit.

Activities on wellness are also included in the program in the form of Zumbahan and Laughter Yoga.

Sponsoring organizations are UP Cebu Gender and Development Office, Women’s Resource Center of the Visayas (WRCV), Sidlak Gender Resource Center – 7, GABRIELA-Cebu, UP Cebu Office of Anti-sexual Harassment, UP Cebu Computing Services Unit and UP Cebu All UP Workers Union (AUPWU).

UP Cebu celebrates Women’s Month

womens month 03-2014An afternoon of performances featuring UP Serenata, poetry reading from Tinta, inspirational and solidarity messages from the administration, student organizations, environmentalists, and GAD champions representing civil society groups and agencies will kick off the Opening of the Women’s Month celebration in UP Cebu on March 3, 2014 at 4:00 PM. Dean Liza D. Corro and Councilor Lea Japson of the Committee on Women and Children of the Cebu City Council are among the invited speakers.

A parade starting at the AS Grounds will precede the cultural event at the UP Cebu Oblation Square. SayawE will lead the One Billion Rising Dance and the Zumba-han after the program. The theme for this year is “Juana, ang Tatag Mo ay Tatag Natin sa Pagbangon at Pagsulong!”

Through the leadership of the Coordinator of the Gender and Development Office Dr.Rhodora Bucoy, series of activities are lined up for the month-long celebration.

The National Service Training Program headed by Prof. Phoebe Zoe Sanchez will likewise hold a Women’s March Rally in the morning of March 5.

A forum, co-sponsored by Sidlak Gender Resource Center 7, on “Women in Disaster and the Continuing Disaster of Trafficking of Girls for Cyber Sex and Pornography in Cebu” is scheduled on March 12 at 1:00 PM at the Audiovisual Room 2. Invited speakers include Prof. Kaira Zoe A. Cañete of the UP Cebu Social Sciences Cluster, Ms. Portia Dacalos of the Philippine Guidance Counselors Association and Senior Superintendent Ma. Theresa Macatangay of the Regional Anti-Human Trafficking Task Force – Central Visayas. Solidarity fellowship of Sidlak partners and the unveiling of the Mural and Art Exhibits of the Fine Arts Class of Prof. Palmy Pe-Tudtud will follow.

UP Cebu to hold training-workshop on Psychosocial Assistance in Times of Disaster

The University of the Philippines’ University Center for Women’s Studies in coordination with the University of the Philippines Cebu (UP Cebu) Gender and Development Office is conducting a training workshop on Psychosocial Assistance in Times of Disaster this January 28-29, 2014 at the AVR-2.

The activity intends to orient participants to psychosocial assistance core principles and standards of care; identify gender based violence in times of disaster; discuss assessment and interventions that promote well being post disaster; identify and orient participants on skills needed for psychosocial assistance — listening and responding skills, documenting cases, etc.; and plan action to be taken to help rebuild areas hit by disasters in the Visayas.
