UPelikula raises its bars to inter-university film competition

Film, fame, and glory- UPelikula is going way beyond the big screen this 2014. Gathering all amateur filmmakers all over Cebu, UPelikula: Beyond The Big Screen aims to give local filmmaking talents due recognition for their capabilities.

“There are many young talents in Cebu, and it’s quite unfortunate that the se talents remain hidden and unrecognised,” said Sir Ulysses Sison, assistant professor in the University of the Philippines Cebu (UP Cebu) and the advisor of UPelikula. This event is more than just films- it’s about the filmmaker and his or her abilities and giving them the honour that independent and struggling filmmakers deserve, thus going “beyond the big screen”, said Sison.

UPelikula began as a recognition of University of the Philippines Cebu’s filmmakers. For years, UPelikula remained this way until Sison said that he wanted something bigger and better. This year’s UPelikula event is the brainchild of bringing recognition to independent filmmakers and of making UPelikula an event bigger than the four walls of the university.

“This year’s UPelikula has a lot of activities as we have opened our doors to all filmmakers who want to submit entries,” said Paulo Salada, the over-all director of UPelikula 2014.

The event will kick off with a press conference on February 17, announcing all the finalists, followed by a film caravan in selected universities in Cebu. UPelikula will end on February 20 with an award’s night.

“The award’s night will be similar of the Oscar’s and the Golden Globe’s. UPelikula’s goal is to give low-budget and aspiring filmmakers the glory that comes with their handwork,” said Sison.

UPelikula is an event of the university’s annual MassComm Days, which will occupy a two-week stretch beginning this February 10 until February 21, 2014.
