2013

  • On January 30, 2013, Atty. Liza D. Corro was installed as the UP Cebu Dean by the 20th UP President Alfredo E. Pascual. This was the beginning for many new things as the year 2013 posed a very busy one for UP Cebu.
  • To promote a culture of innovation among students, Chancellor Corro launched the IDEYA Challenge, a competition which encourages students to come up with innovative ideas to institute start-up companies.
  • At the same time, CEBUinIT earned its reputation as one of the more mature and developed TBI facilities in the Philippines. This facility helped not just UP constituents but others in the region develop innovative business solutions.
  • The value of UP Cebu’s 2013 maintenance and other operating expenditures was the biggest in the history of UP Cebu. A massive transformation was in the way with the Campus Renewal Plan. From what was once a disorganized and neglected campus façade, landscaping projects were undertaken. UP Cebu now boasts manicured grounds.
  • Large iron gates were installed to secure the campus, complete with closed circuit television cameras.
  • Students’ kiosks mushroomed and more covered walks that connected buildings

2014

  • Then at the start of 2014, UP Cebu constituents agreed to course its direction to be the “lead university in pioneering research, creative design, ICT-driven innovation, responsible governance and community service in the Central Visayas and the global society.” The conversion of the Arts and Sciences Lobby into the AS Conference Hall was the beginning of it all. What used to be UP Cebu’s biggest ‘tambayan’ for students, now hosts a new airconditioned facility. The AS Conference Hall proved to be ‘heaven-sent’ for both students and faculty.
  • It provided UP Cebu a venue to host in big international conferences and seminars, like the ASEAN University Network Conference on ASEAN integration and the Satellite Workshop on Theory and Computation
  • An even bigger challenge was curbing the damage against natural disasters. Disasters get stronger each year, thus the need for a high technology response. The University of the Philippines Cebu is among the state universities and colleges taking part in the efforts to make use of advanced Light Detection and Ranging or LIDAR. A 3D mapping technology to address the seemingly non-stop disasters.
  • The Philippine Lidar (Phil-Lidar) 1 Project aims to produce high-resolution three-dimensional (3D) flood hazard maps in an effort to aid government disaster planners and responders in addressing the loss of lives and damage to property caused by natural disasters, particularly flooding.
  • Finding the right brand is not an easy task. The words thrown into the table were either poetic or merely aesthetic; some words were highly technical, but of no value to the UP Cebu brand. As such, UP Cebu was seen a multifaceted point of view.  One, UP Cebu was founded in 1918, it has gone through some upheavals marked by several renaming, closures, and reopenings. Two, UP Cebu fosters creativity as exemplified by its Product Design Program, and innovation through excellence in Computer Science and research. Three, UP Cebu is a community of inspired and inspiring individuals in providing a repository of knowledge and learning. And Four, as a campus of the national university, UP Cebu is endowed with the idea that service is in its blood. On February 14 2014, the UP Cebu motto was released

Nurtured to Create. Inspired to Innovate. Destined to Serve.

2015

  • In 2015, under Chancellor Corro’s administration, academics took the lead. The Sciences Cluster made notable recognitions. The Department of Computer Science established the Center for Research on Intelligence Systems or CRIS. Seven research laboratories were established under it.
  • As such, the Commission on Higher Education has recognized the BS Computer Science program as a Center for Excellence in Information Technology. Additionally, the MS Environmental Studies has been designated as a Center of Development in Environmental Studies.
  • In its efforts for internationalization, the Business Management Cluster held a meeting with Technische Hochschule Ingolstadt Business School from Ingolstadt, Germany to enhance its exchange student program.

2016

  • 2016 defined UP Cebu as it was elevated as the 8th Constituent University of the UP System on October 27, 2016. As a constituent university, all four clusters of UP Cebu will be elevated to colleges and schools with Atty. Liza D. Corro heading the university as the first Chancellor. Beyond the physical creation of new offices and new titles of its administrators, UP Cebu was able to chart its own direction.
  • In moving forward throughout the academic year, the University focused on research, student, and faculty development. As one of the country’s centers of excellence in design and information technology, the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) established and launched the Fabrication Laboratory (FabLab) in UP Cebu.

2017

  • 2017 marked the first full year of UP Cebu as the 8th Constituent Unit of the University of the Philippines System.

2018

  • Originally named the Junior College of Liberal Arts in Cebu City, the University of the Philippines Cebu was established on May 3, 1918. The youngest of UP system’s constituent unit and ready to celebrate its centennial year. The UP Cebu history has become proof that, throughout hardships and struggles, UP Cebu has stood up against the test of times and pushed its limits. Looking back, UP Cebu has grown from adversity and change.
  • The most symbolic of these changes is the replacement of the iconic Oblation with the “real” one – that is, following National Artist Guillermo Tolentino’s original mold.
  • This commemorative centennial celebration was launched with a motorcade with the theme “Unang Siglo: Halad sa Katawhan Celebrating Academic Excellence and Public Service (1918 – 2018)” travelling from the UP Lahug Campus to the UP Cebu SRP Campus.
  • 2018 witnessed the birth of CENVI, FireCheck, and STiiTCH as research centers. These centers helped stakeholders from both private and public sectors to be empowered by equipping them with the necessary skills, information, and tools that enable them to pursue their goals with efficiency and preciseness.
  • UP Cebu’s academic commitment is centered on solving real, societal problems with science and technology. CENVI’s technical support and high-resolution maps, together with DOST-ASTI DATOS’ assistance, greatly contributed to the search and retrieval operations in the devastating landslide in the City of Naga last September 2018.
  • UP Cebu has also taken initiatives to renovate buildings and classrooms to make an environment more conducive to learning. Additionally, to accommodate more students who come from the provinces, a four-story dormitory is in the works.

2019

  • As it is in our blood to be in service. 2019 was a year that celebrated the successes of our research and international reach. • The Special Recognition in Digital Innovation at the 7th PropertyGuru Philippines Property Awards 2019 was presented to the FireCheck Project. Additionally, after an intensive 1.5 years of research, FireCheck officially turned over sets of fire hazard maps, fire risk maps, and neighborhood evacuation maps to the local government unit of Mandaue and the Bureau of Fire Protection 7.
  • UP Cebu hosted the Taiwan Education Fair at the Performing Arts Hall where over 30 Taiwan Universities were present to give out scholarships to Filipino students. This was the first time the organizers held the fair for the Vis-Min region.
  • With the help of STiiTCH and TTBDO, a UP Cebu alumna won the first ever Blue Mango Award for Best Product Design: Main Exhibit Category for SISU Emergency Survival Vest for Children.
  • The collaboration between the two centers also brought forth the Daanbantayan branding project. A project that helped a women’s group produce and sell their detergent product.
  • As part of UP Cebu’s anniversary celebrations, UP Cebu held its third annual run, UPHill Challenge 3 wherein proceeds will be donated to the Kadaganan Program of the University of the Philippines Cebu which is a “bridging fund” intended towards helping underprivileged university students in times of emergency.
  • To cap off 2019, the Google Business Group (GBG) held BizFest Cebu 2019 at the AS Hall. The BizFest gathered micro-small and medium entrepreneurs (MSMEs), women entrepreneurs, start-ups, among others in order to capitalize technology in growing their respective businesses.
