The University of the Philippines Cebu and the Lapu-Lapu City Government formalized their partnership on disaster risk reduction through the signing of a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) at City Hall on February 17, 2025. This collaboration strengthens their shared commitment to enhancing disaster preparedness, response, and mitigation efforts within the city.

The signing ceremony was attended by key officials, including Lapu-Lapu City Mayor Junard “Ahong” Chan, UP Cebu Chancellor Atty. Leo Malagar, Dr. Nagiel Bañacia, Officer-in-Charge of the Lapu-Lapu City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO), and Dr. Jonnifer Sinogaya of UP Cebu’s Center for Environmental Informatics (CENVI).

UP Cebu has long been a strong partner of Lapu-Lapu City, contributing to initiatives like #AndamLapuLapu and the Installation of Standby Wells for Emergencies and Research (ISWEaR) project, a DOST-7-supported program focused on improving water security during emergencies.

The renewed partnership highlights the vital role of research-driven solutions, innovation, and community collaboration in building disaster resilience.
