13th Visayas-Mindanao Debate Championship

UPC CJ (John Carlo Oboy & Jose Miguel Villarin) and AI (Ady Balimbingan & Isabela Villanueva) broke 3rd and 4th respectively in the college category of the tournament. UPC CJ bowed out as quarterfinalists while UPC AI ended their run as semifinalists.

Isabela Villanueva was awarded as 4th best speaker while John Carlo Oboy was awarded as 5th best speaker, both in the college category.

UPC BJ (Bea Castrence & Angelica Joie) made valiant strides during the preliminary rounds of the tournament while Dominique Orozco was one of the breaking judges and had the opportunity to chair one of the quarterfinal rounds.

These achievements were garnered in competition with the best debating teams and adjudicators of the Visayas-Mindanao region.

Magiting Cup

Ella Toledo Alvarez for her succeeds as one of the breaking judges in the Magiting Cup hosted by Debaters for Leni and Debatable on August 28 – 30, 2021. The Magiting Cup is one of the initiatives within the debating community to promote voter education in anticipation of the 2022 Philippine elections.

2nd Philippine Wom*n’s Open

For the 2nd Philippine Wom*n’s Open held on September 4-5, 2021, St. Rita with Love (Isabela Villanueva in composite with USJR student Stacey Marie Castañares) broke to the quarterfinals of the open division, becoming the 12th overall team to make the cut.

Beanut Butter and Gelly (Bea Castrence and Angelica Joie) fought valiantly, garnering consistent speaker scores throughout the entirety of the tournament’s preliminary rounds. These achievements are hard-won through competition with some of the best women and gender minority debaters across the nation.

1st Regatta Intervarsity

Lantugi Deputy Prime Minister Isabela Villanueva in composite with San Beda University student Julian Marques broke 3rd in the open division, eventually becoming one of four teams to compete in the Grand Finals for the 1st Regatta Intervarsity held on September 11-12, 2021.      

The event was hosted by the Rotaract Club of Western Mindanao State University.

PH Economania Debates

UP Cebu Lantugi starts the academic year strong at the Philippine Economania Debates hosted by UP Mindanao Debate Society from September 18 – 19, 2021.

Bea Castrence and Angelica Joie Braga claimed the GRAND CHAMPIONS title in the novice breaks category. Bea was awarded as the final round’s best speaker. The team also ranked 1st in the novice breaks category.

Roch Mendoza and Arjoe Marie Cabudlan also went to compete in the grand finals round of the open breaks category where their team ranked 4th. Arjoe was awarded 7th best speaker in the same category. She was also awarded 6th best speaker and Roch as 9th best speaker in the novice breaks category.
